First, I'd like to say this is my first Deborah Hale book but it's certainly not my last. I couldn't put the book down. Maura Woodbury, an enchantress, has always led a quiet life...until her uncle, a kindly Wizard announces that she's to be queen of all Umbria and has to make her way to the Secret Glade and awaken the Waiting King who will drive the evil Han from Umbria forever and restore peace to all the land.

Just when Maura begins to accept her fate, she meets and saves Rath Talward, one of the outlaws she dislikes almost as much as the Han. He's injured and on the run from Hanish law. Maura cannot abandon him to his fates and eventually they strike up a bargain: Healing for protection on her trip to the Secret Glade.

Their trip's certainly not a stroll through the park. There are Hannish soldiers and Dark Sorcerers, the Echtroi, waiting at every turn to drag them off to the dreaded mines as slaves, bandits hide in the underbrush, and so the story goes. Throughout all this, Maura and Rath learn to put their differences aside, I enjoyed the pacing of the book...a bit slow at first, but then book picks up speed and I really started to get into it. I suspected what Rath was early on in the book, but won't spoil it for you. The more I read, the more I liked it. I enjoyed the various characters encountered and the obvious sexual tension between Maura and Rath, and I wanted to find out if the guy gets the girl in the end.
Well done Deborah. Now on to book two.

The Wizard Ward Deborah Hale 9780373811137 Books Reviews

Was a fairly interesting book.
Enjoyable
I really enjoyed the story line, it was a fun read. I wasn't prepared for the details of the characters sexual encounters. I have only read the authors Christian stories so I guess I was surprised to see it. I admit I skipped over pages because I didn't want to read it. I would have loved it otherwise.
Love this book!
Characters that I could love, a nice adventure with a purpose. Characters were not just black and white. They had both flaws and redeeming traits. Nice story that represented faith as well as doubt but also showed how both of these can be shaken and strengthened.
A saw this book at wal mart a few years ago. My mom bought it for my birthday. I read it in a few days. It is one of the best books that I have ever read. I love the characters and that there are not a million of them. The plot is easy to keep up with and even though it was somewhat predictable I still loved it's easy going pace. There was a lot of romantic tension between Rath and Maura but it was enjoyable. The author did not over do the sexuality like so many other authors that will make you blush. For the most part it was a simple tale of good vs. evil with a romantic suspense that leaves you sad that the story is over. I loved this book. I have read other stories by Debrorah Hale but this is by far the best one.
I really got into this book. I was reading like an obsessed woman. I’ve read all three books in the trilogy and I believe this is the best one. The characters are what hooked me. The author did a fantastic job making them real. You have to know what happens to them next, sleep can wait

The Wizard's Ward has been sitting on my TBR shelves for about three years. I'm not sure what took me so long to get around to reading these, probably the fact that I just have a massive TBR pile (both physical and virtual), like every other avid reader out there.

I really enjoyed this story! The writing is generally pretty good, though the dialogues occasionally felt a bit stilted, and the author does a fair amount of detailed world-building for someone whose native genre is romance. (The fact that Hale's native genre is NOT fantasy is likely why the dialogue occasionally came off a bit awkwardly.) This book is a blend of fantasy and romance, leaning more heavily toward fantasy. I greatly enjoyed the interaction between Maura and Rath from the very beginning, despite the fact that it was a rather predictable relationship. What can I say, I'm a sucker for boy meets girl, boy and girl despise each other, and eventually boy and girl fall in love. It works! (At least it does for me...) Admittedly, anyone reading this probably realizes relatively early on just how the story will end, but I do love a happy ending and enjoyed seeing the events leading up to it unfold. Maura and Rath have a very action-packed adventure, to say the least!

What I thought was lacking from the story was a broader cast of characters. The book revolves almost exclusively around Maura and Rath--and their quest to find the Waiting King--for the overwhelming majority of the story. Sure, they run into other people here and there, but with the exception of the first few chapters, this is almost entirely the "Rath and Maura Show." It just seemed a little unrealistic for a quest such as theirs. Of course, this gave me plenty of time to enjoy their building relationship, but I did feel as if something was missing from the overall story. Even so, I look forward to reading the sequel, though I am worried that I won't enjoy it as much, since the anticipation of the unfolding romance won't be there. This book has received mixed reviews, but I guess it was what I expected and what I was looking for when I picked it up, so I thought it was enjoyable!
