High recommended. .Great story, loved the authors writing style..
Tess Connolly, the main character of Don't You Forget About Me, is a little ridiculous, but not totally unlikable. There are a couple of cringe-worthy moments when I can't believe girls like this really exist and furthermore that other people, presumably also girls, want to read about them. At times the character seems so shallow, and frankly quite stupid too, that I can't believe I didn't stop reading immediately.
What saves this book is that its moral is sound don't pretend to be something you're not. In order to keep her boyfriend Seb happy and their relationship thriving, Tess is constantly trying to be something she's not, often with disastrous consequences. This message of being true to yourself is reinforced by the character Fiona, Tess' flatmate, who not only is the most unhealthy health & beauty editor, but she's prepared to adopt a fake persona to fit in with the 'posh set'.
Throughout the year that we follow the characters they discover more about themselves and who they truly are. With this new-found knowledge they are able to form better and stronger relationships with the people around them and ultimately be happier.
Having read and enjoyed other books by this author I was really looking forward to this one. I loved the whole idea of Tess changing her actions to try to eradicate her regrets, I knew it would make for interesting reading.
The book began on New Years Eve so the fact that I started reading it on that date was perfect! Tess was apparently still upset over her break up from sexy American Seb and when it came to midnight she made a wish that she had never met him. This was the part that I was most looking forward to, I couldn't wait to see how her actions would differ from the first time around.
As with the other books by this author I did lots of laughing, there were many funny moments but a few stick out in my head - a fake sweat disaster, the after effects of spicy food and a military fitness class are all events in this book that you should look out for. Whenever Tess visited her Gramps in the nursing home I couldn't help but smile and I felt that this was a nice touch for the book as it gave it more of a family feel.
I was surprised to find myself getting annoyed with Tess as the book progressed, it seemed that she was trying to be someone completely different and I couldn't see why she would change her life just for Seb (who was also seriously getting on my nerves with his selfish ways). Saying that, I did find it interesting to see how she reacted to things with the power of hindsight under her belt.
Even though I guessed quite early on how this would end, I still enjoyed the journey to get there and I think that it sent out a good message - you should always be yourself!
This was an enjoyable book, not my favourite by this author but it was definitely a fun read.
Well, I must say that this is my sixth Alexandra Potter book and I loved them all. All of her books are so optimistic, so full of laughter, I can't get enough of them. So here's the plot
Tess is so sad after the break-up with long-term boyfriend Seb. He doesn't even like her. He doesn't see them together in future. How cruel is that? Spending the New Year's Eve all by herself, Tess hears on TV about very strange tradition. If you want to get rid of your memories, you have to burn them on New Year's Eve, so they won't be there in the year that follows. So, Tess does just that. She burns all the things that she collected during the relationship with Seb.
Next morning, strange things start to happen. Her flatmate doesn't remember her relationship with Seb. The PC is broken, so all photos of them together are gone. Even Seb doesn't recognize her. Yuuupiiii!!! She has a chance to start everything all over again. She'll do the things right this time. And Seb will love her, and will see them together in future.
But is it worth? To be someone else just to be loved? Why can't you be loved just because of yourself?
Everyone wants to make things right, to correct the mistakes from the past. But mistakes are part of our experience and teach us to choose well in the future. Tess always tries to make best impression. In order to keep Seb, she goes against her will, doing the things that she doesn't like. But how about the things that she likes? There were moments when I wanted to shut out "Tess, what are you doing? Not liking Sci-fi movies doesn't make you a bad person!"
I never expected her relationship with Seb to work, they are so different. Seb is not a bad guy, just different. He likes snowboarding, sci-fi movies, hates marriage. But that's just him, with the things that he likes and doesn't like.
On the other side, there is Fergus, the guy who delivers mail at the office where Tess works. He is kind, hard-working actor-to-be, who pays the bills with this delivery job. And he follows his dream, to become an actor one day.
One character that I like most is Tess's grandpa. That funny old man is the best role model for her, he gives her good advices. His marriage with Tess's grandma until she died and their long-lasting love are the things that everyone, including Tess, wants in the life.
So romcom lovers, don't forget this humorous and light read and enjoy reading it.
Loved it, read it in a day! It might have helped a bit that I was stuck to the couch with an ankle fracture.. For everyone who wonders if life would have been different if they could do it again.
Wasn't a massive fan of Potter's first novel but I really liked this. It really does drive home the message of "Be careful what you wish for' and doesn't get lost along the way.
I really enjoyed this book - I am quite the Alexandra Potter fan. At times I found it a bit tedious and wondered how Tess could be so naive but it was a nice little journey and overall, a good read.
My favorite book! Is more about a story for every girl who wishes she’d been different to avoid been dumped. If only she could turn back time...
